 Monthly News from the Principal

Dear Parents,

As the school year rapidly passes by, we have begun the process of planning for next year. Next Monday (February 1st) and Tuesday (February 2nd) we will register next year’s kindergarten students. Monday we will take registrations from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. On Tuesday we will register from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. If you have a child entering kindergarten next year or know of a friend, neighbor, or colleague who has a child of kindergarten age, please tell them to come and register. It is probably more important this year that any previous year that we know exactly how many students to expect. If for some reason you can’t make it in to register on those two days, call us so we at least know you plan to register later in the week.
I want to remind parents to make certain your child knows how to stay safe on the walk to and from school. There have been a couple of incidents at other schools in LPS where children have been approached by an adult on the way to or from school. Obviously we don’t want our children exposed to this kind of situation but we must prepare them by teaching them how to remain safe. We stress being safe in our Life Skills classes but need you to also take this opportunity to talk to your child about the need to be aware of their surroundings during the walk to and from school and to always walk with other students. We included some talking points later in this newsletter to help facilitate this conversation.
Soon the Board of Education will make final decisions about staffing for next year. We anticipate significant cuts, which will make school level staffing decisions challenging. I have begun some conversations with staff and will meet with the PTO Executive Board very soon. I won’t be announcing final plans until I am absolutely confident I know the final budget for 2010-2011. This is a difficult time for everyone but I want to assure you that we at Runyon will keep our focus on meeting the learning needs of your children and will work through this process in a deliberate and civil manner.
I want to thank Mr. Schiemann and all his volunteers for their work on and at the Science Fair. It was very impressive and well orchestrated. We all so appreciate how every activity sponsored by PTO is carried out with such commitment and good will. Thank you again for all you do.
As always, if you have questions and/or concerns please call or email us.

                                                                           Sincerely,
                                                                        David Hilliard
